Arrive in Halifax and collect your rental vehicle. The rest of the day is free to explore this true maritime city. First settled in 1749, Halifax today is Nova Scotia’s capital and the largest city in Canada’s Maritime Provinces.

The day is free to explore boutiques, pubs and cafes of Privateers Warehouse and Historic Properties. Get a terrific view of the city from the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site and visit York Redoubt National Historic Site, a 200-year-old fortification overlooking Halifax Harbour.

Halifax to Lunenburg

Today, travel along the Atlantic Ocean shore towards Lunenburg. This region is home to some of the most scenic coastal vistas and historical attractions. Visit Peggy’s Cove along the way. Peggy’s Cove (45km) is a small fishing village famous for its picturesque and typically East Coast style, with houses perched along a narrow inlet and on wave-washed boulders facing the Atlantic. The famous Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, built in 1915 atop a giant rock, may be the most-photographed in Canada, especially with the ocean waves crashing in. Continue along the coastal road. Make a stop at the Acadian Maple Product store (approximately 26 km from Peggy’s Cove) and shop for pure Nova Scotia maple syrup. After a day full of expected and unexpected discoveries arrive in Lunenburg for 2-night stay.

The day is free to explore Old Town Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring the colourful waterfront and narrow streets. You may wish to join a walking tour of Lunenburg (not included), visit Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic (not included), or drive to Blue Rock (8 km) – unspoiled seaside village known for its seascapes and fascinating geology.

Lunenburg to Digby

This morning cross the peninsula and make a stop at Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, renowned for its hiking trails and incredible canoeing on wilderness lakes and rivers. Park interpretive staff conducts outings on foot to reveal the natural history of the area, including the Mi’kmaq petroglyphs. Continue to Digby Pines Golf Resort.

Whale watching and fishing villages
Today drive 65 km along the Digby Neck to experience a whale watching excursion in the nutrient rich waters of the Bay of Fundy. You will likely see finback and minkes, humpbacks or even the rare North Atlantic right whale. Spend the afternoon exploring Annapolis Royal and Fort Anne.

Digby to Wolfville

This morning visit Port-Royal National Historic Site, featuring a reconstruction of the Habitation, where, in 1605, Samuel de Champlain helped establish one of North America’s earliest settlements. In the afternoon travel to Wolfville. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Wolfville to Pictou

Leave Wolfville and head to the Northumberland Shore, where you can experience the warmest sea waters North of Virginia. Pictou is known as the birthplace of Nova Scotia as it was here in 1733 that the first Scots arrived in the province looking for a new life in the new world. The town of Pictou has an excellent interpretive centre with a life-size replica of the Ship Hector, which brought the Scottish settlers to Nova Scotia.

Pictou to Cape Breton Island

Today, travel to Cape Breton Island, a little piece of Scotland in North America. As you journey up across the Canso causeway onto the island, the scenery becomes more rugged. Your destination for today is the Inverary Resort. Originally built in 1850, this 11-acre resort sits on the shores of the glorious Bras d’Or Lakes.

Louisbourg Sightseeing
This morning head north to discover the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site – this incredible “living museum,” the largest historical reconstruction in North America, is an impressive restoration of a French garrison town dating from the 1700’s, complete with costumed interpreters who re-enact the daily life from the French colonial period. You can even sample period food in the restaurant or take part in a mock battle. Also, don’t miss a visit to Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, a museum dedicated to the life and inventions of this fascinating man – who spent his summers on the shores of the Bras d’Or. Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site is located in a residential area on the eastern edge of Baddeck.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Cape Breton Highlands National Park is known for its spectacular highlands and ocean scenery. Accessible via the famous Cabot Trail, the park offers many treasures and extraordinary experiences. This morning drive towards Ingonish and visit Cape Breton Highlands National Park visitor center to start your 2-day Cabot Trail adventure. There are 26 beautiful hiking trails in the National Park range from easy strolls to challenging climbs – they all lead to panoramic views of canyons, highlands and seacoast. The most recommended one would be the Skyline Trail which is approximately located about 15-minute drive from the Cheticamp park entrance. Along the way visit the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre Route 19 Judique (approx.. 25 minutes from causeway) or the Glenora Distillery Route 19/ Ceilidh Trail, Glenville (between Inverness and Mabou, about 30 minutes from Judique). Other stops may include Acadian Cultural Center & Museum (Les Trois Pignons ) or St. Ann’s Gaelic College of Arts & Crafts.

Ingonish to Liscombe Mills

Today the journey will take you from Cape Breton Island along the scenic Bras d’Or Lakes. Continue to the Canso Causeway to enter mainland Nova Scotia. As you head towards Liscombe, a stop at Sherbrooke Village is advised. The town depicts a typical Nova Scotia village with 80 dwellings from 1860-1910, over 25 of which are open to the public, most with costumed interpreters.

For your last day in Nova Scotia follow the coast road back to Halifax and do some last minute souvenir shopping before heading out to the airport where your vacation ends.
