11 Delicious American Foods You Have to Try
Many American foods have a history in other countries and cultures, which makes American cuisine so wonderfully diverse…and weird at times!
Read on for our selection of America’s most iconic food dishes that you must try…
Philly Cheesesteak
As the name suggests, this almighty sandwich hails from Philadelphia and is one of our team’s favourites! Thinly sliced pieces of beef steak and melted cheese in a hoagie roll make up this classic. Common additions include bell peppers, fried onions, ketchup, mayo and hot sauce…mouth-watering!
Don’t worry if you’re veggie or vegan, as a modern Philly Cheesesteak can be made using seitan for the steak and vegan cheese.

Key Lime Pie
This famous dessert is named after the small Key limes that can be found throughout the Florida Keys, and features a mixture of Key lime juice, egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk encased in a pie crust.
Its exact origins are unknown, but the first mention of Key Lime Pie is attributed to William Curry, a prominent businessman and Key West’s first millionaire.
Did you know? A Key Lime Festival is held every year over the Independence Day weekend to celebrate of the use of Key Limes in food – ‘Citrus, eccentrics, people & pie’!
Muffuletta sandwich
Originating amongst Italian immigrants in New Orleans, this sandwich was created on Decatur Street and is an iconic addition to this list! A traditional-style muffuletta sandwich consists of a muffuletta loaf covered with layers of marinated olive salad, mortadella, Swiss cheese and provolone, ham and salami. Yum!
Chicago-style pizza
Very different to your typical Italian pizza base, a Chicago-style pizza is more like a deep-dish open topped pie topped with pepperoni or sausage meat. The pan used to bake the pizza gives it it’s characteristically high edge. If you’ve ever in Chicago, you have to give this a try!
Sweet Tea
Yes, yes, it’s not a food! But who said Americans don’t know anything about tea? After the Boston Tea Party, Americans looked to improve on British imports and specialities, and there are few better ways to re-hydrate during a humid Deep South afternoon than with iced black tea with extra sugar and a squeeze of lemon!
Barbecue
Barbecue is a great American staple, with each region having different ways to spice and prepare the meat.
Whether it’s sticky and sugary in Kansas, to juicy and smoked in Texas, or vinegar-dosed pulled pork in North Carolina – barbecue is the original American food.
Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich
Also known as PB&J, this sandwich has roots within the US military, when both peanut butter and jelly were on the ration menus during World War II. Peanut butter was cheap and a high protein alternative to meat for soldiers, whilst adding the jelly made the sandwich taste more appealing! Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches became an instant hit and returning soldiers caused peanut butter and jelly sales to soar in the United States.
Did you know? – April 2nd has been named an unofficial National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day!

Lobster Rolls
A New England summer seafood classic. A lobster roll includes lobster meat served in a hot dog-style bun. The filling may also contain butter, lemon juice, salt and black pepper.
McDonald’s restaurants in New England and Canadian provinces such as Nova Scotia and Ontario include lobster rolls as a limited-edition menu item in the summer!
Reuben sandwich
Originating in the 1920’s, this sandwich consists of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing on rye bread. The origin of the sandwich isn’t quite confirmed – one origin story says that a grocer from Nebraska by the name of Reuben Kulakofsky was the inventor. Another version is that the sandwich’s creator was Arnold Reuben, who owned the famed Reuben’s Delicatessen (1908–2001) in New York City!
Biscuits and Gravy
A popular American breakfast dish, and totally different to what most Brits think of when you say biscuits and gravy (which to us just sounds wrong – Rich Tea and Bisto anyone?)
A North American biscuit can be compared to a savoury scone, with biscuits and gravy being made up of soft dough biscuits covered in a white meat gravy, made from pork sausage dripping, white flour, milk, and bits of sausage, bacon, ground beef, or other meat.
Cheeseburger
Finally, you can’t have a list of American food without including the epic cheese burger. Everyone argues about where you’ll find the best burger in America, but we personally think you can’t go wrong in Texas, California or Tennessee…
