Accommodation
The accommodation used is of a tourist-moderate class. For the most part they are clean functional motor lodges which are very typical for Alaska and the Yukon where many regions are quite remote and undeveloped. The emphasis of this itinerary is very much outdoors, driving through stunning scenery and getting out experiencing things first hand, so basic clean comfortable places to overnight are ideal.

Financial Protection
By booking this complete package with Complete North America you benefit from reduced rates on flights, accommodation and car rental along with complete financial protection. We are fully bonded with the Civil Aviation Authority and this package is ATOL protected under ATOL No.5368.

Preparation
As with all of our driving holidays we will supply you with comprehensive driving directions and your fly-drive guide book in addition to all your documentation for flights, vehicle rental and accommodation. A member of our team would also be happy to recommend websites where you can obtain further useful information on the destinations before you leave the U.K. On arrival in Anchorage you will receive a full briefing from our agent in Alaska.

Day 1

Arrive Anchorage

There are no direct flights to Anchorage from the U.K. we offer the most convenient flights which operate via Seattle, WA. On arrival, transfer yourself to your overnight hotel, alternatively we can arrange a private meet, greet and transfer at an additional cost, please ask for a quote.

Day 2

Anchorage – Denali National Park – 237 miles / 5 hours

This morning you will receive a comprehensive tour briefing in the hotel with our representative who will then accompany you to the car rental station & will assist you in collecting your rental car. After picking up your car, drive the Glenn Highway north to Wasilla. Interesting stops along the Glenn Highway might be the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Eklutna Indian Village. In Wasilla continue on the Parks Highway north towards Denali National Park. Drive through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and Denali State Park. Possible side trip to Talkeetna (especially to recommend on a clear weather day). From here you can enjoy some of the best views of the Alaska Range and Mt. McKinley (weather permitting.) Spectacular flight seeing tours are also available from Talkeetna and definitely recommend.
Hotel - Denali Grizzly Bear Resort

> View Talkeetna Excursions

Day 3

Denali National Park

Today enjoy a 6-8 hour bus tour into Denali National Park (approx. 53 miles into the park, snack included). The park is inhabited by different animal species such as bears, caribou, moose, sheep, wolves and a variety of birds. Mt. McKinley can be seen if the weather is clear today. (In shoulder season the duration of the bus tour will be shorter due to weather / road conditions!)

Day 4

Denali National Park – Fairbanks – 125 miles / 2.5 hours

Continue the Parks Highway north to Fairbanks. Accompanied by incredible forest and mountain landscape you reach Fairbanks, which has a gold rush history. In the morning, take the Alaska Marine Highway ferry to Haines. Please note that ferry time may vary and is subject to change. Take some more time to visit Haines and learn about its history. One of the unique areas near Haines is the Chilkat Valley and Bald eagle preserve. Especially in the fall and winter time, hundreds of bald eagles come to this valley. Today's drive takes you through this area and further north along the perimeter of Kluane National Park. Weather permitting you can enjoy impressive mountain scenery. Your overnight is planned in Haines Junction where the head quarters of the Kluane National Park is located. Please note that the park is not accessible by road. The best way to see parts of this park is with a flightseeing tour which is available from Haines Junction.

Day 11

Haines Junction (Kluane National Park) – Tok – 297 miles / 6 hours

Day 12

Tok – Wasilla – 298 miles / 5.5 hours

Travel the Tok Cutoff through less changing mountain scenery and forested landscape to Glennallen, then continue on the scenic Glenn Highway to Wasilla. Day 13

Wasilla – Seward – 167 miles / 3.5 hours

Drive the Glenn Highway south to Anchorage and continue on the Seward Highway. Once outside of Anchorage travel along the scenic Turnagain Arm. Here you can take the tram up Mt Alyeska. Another interesting stop might be Portage Glacier and its interesting visitor center. In Seward you might want to visit Exit Glacier and the SeaLife Center.

Weather
You might be surprised to learn that parts of Alaska and the Yukon can be really quite warm in summer. Winters are severe but Mid-June through mid-August is usually the warmest time of year, especially in the Interior, where temperatures can reach well above 80°F / 27°C; it is not uncommon to see temperatures reach 90°F / 33° C in Fairbanks. However, it is important to note that evening temperatures can still be cool in the summer.

The southern coastal regions of Alaska can be wet and cloudy at any time of year. Average summer temperatures range from 40°F to 60°F (4° - 15°C).

In general, Alaska and Western Canada temperatures average above 50°F / 10°C for at least four months of the year (mid-May through mid-Sep), and with the exceptionally long sunlight hours this is why we offer this program between May – September however as your travels will take you through varying elevations temperatures could change quite rapidly and for this reason we suggest you take layered clothing so that you can adapt quickly to the changing conditions.

Hotel Availability
Sometimes the hotels named in this itinerary are not available at the time of booking. Under these circumstances Complete North America will book alternative accommodation of a similar standard. Such changes will be confirmed in writing to you at the time of booking confirmation. If you are not completely happy with the alternative hotel we will happily discuss other possibilities with you in the same location.
